Redefining the Brisbane commute through art and technology

Brisbane’s new underground will be a living celebration of a cultural heritage like no other. Cross river Rail Station Art experience allows people to experience 14 world-class pieces of Art showcased at unique station locations across 4 brand new stations. I conceptualised and led the design process to translate this physical gallery into a high-fidelity digital experience, utilising 3D fly-throughs and intuitive navigation to provide a virtual sense of scale and presence for every artwork.

problem

Cross River Rail’s new underground stations will feature 14 artworks by 13 of Queensland’s renowned Indigenous artists, celebrating the state’s unique cultural heritage. The objective is to showcase these artworks virtually, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the backstories and making them accessible to people outside of Brisbane.

Insight

Each artwork tells a unique story of the place, ancestors, traditions, ceremonies, history, and spirituality of the First Nations peoples. It presents travelers with the opportunity to learn and connect with the state’s rich cultural heritage from the traditional owners of the land.

Solution

Cross River Rail Station Art is a mobile-first digital experience that immerses the audience in the beauty and cultural significance of each artwork. Designed to take users on a personal journey through the stations, it employs 3D rendered visuals and 360° images to create the feeling of being there. This experience tells the story of the place and the people, making it the world’s first public transport art gallery.
